First Aid Policy

1. Purpose

This policy outlines how first aid is provided within our Alternative Provision. It ensures prompt, safe and effective responses to accidents, injuries or medical needs during sessions.

2. Principles

• The safety and wellbeing of pupils, staff and tutors is paramount.

• First aid is provided by trained staff within the scope of their competence.

• Medical emergencies are handled swiftly and appropriately.

• Parents/carers and relevant professionals are informed of any incident requiring first aid.

• All first aid activity is recorded accurately.

3. Responsibilities

3.1 Organisation

We will:

• Ensure sufficient numbers of staff hold appropriate first aid or paediatric first aid qualifications.

• Maintain accessible first aid kits for tutors delivering in homes or community settings.

• Provide guidance and training as needed.

• Ensure clear procedures exist for emergencies.

3.2 Tutors and Staff

Tutors must:

• Provide basic first aid within their training and competence.

• Call emergency services when required.

• Inform parents/carers immediately of any injury or concern.

• Record incidents promptly and accurately.

• Carry out sessions only where the environment is safe.

3.3 Parents and Carers

Parents and carers must:

• Provide accurate medical information about the pupil.

• Supply prescribed medication where relevant and ensure instructions are clear.

• Ensure emergency contact details are up to date.

4. First Aid Provision

4.1 First Aid Kits

• First aid kits are provided to tutors or available at designated locations.

• Kits include basic supplies appropriate for minor injuries.

• Staff must check kits regularly and request replenishment when needed.

4.2 Administering First Aid

Staff may provide first aid for:

• Minor cuts, abrasions or bruises

• Nosebleeds

• Minor burns (cooling only)

• Basic wound cleaning and dressing

Staff must not:

• Administer medication unless authorised and trained

• Attempt procedures beyond their competence

• Apply creams or treatments not supplied by parents/carers with written instruction

5. Medical Emergencies

A medical emergency includes:

• Loss of consciousness

• Seizure not previously known or prolonged

• Difficulty breathing

• Chest pain

• Severe bleeding

• Anaphylaxis

• Any injury requiring professional medical assessment

In an emergency:

1. Call 999 immediately.

2. Remain with the pupil and provide reassurance.

3. Follow instructions from emergency services.

4. Contact parents/carers as soon as feasible.

5. Inform the DSL or senior management.

6. Record the incident.

6. Pupils with Medical Needs

Where a pupil has known medical conditions:

• A medical plan or risk assessment must be in place.

• Staff must be briefed on triggers, medication and emergency procedures.

• Parents/carers must supply required medication, clearly labelled.

• Medication is stored safely during sessions and returned afterwards.

Staff do not diagnose medical conditions.

7. Hygiene and Infection Control

• Hands must be washed or sanitised before and after administering first aid.

• Gloves must be worn for contact with bodily fluids.

• Contaminated materials must be disposed of safely.

• Cuts or wounds on staff must be covered.

8. Recording and Reporting

All first aid incidents must be recorded, including:

• Date, time and location

• Nature of injury or illness

• First aid provided

• Outcome and follow-up required

• Whether emergency services were contacted

Records are shared with parents/carers and commissioning bodies where appropriate.

Serious incidents may require reporting under RIDDOR or safeguarding procedures.

9. Off-Site and Home-Based Provision

During home sessions or community-based activities:

• Tutors must ensure the area is safe for learning.

• A portable first aid kit must be available.

• Emergency procedures must be clear, including full address and access instructions.

This policy is reviewed annually or sooner if legislation, guidance or organisational needs change.
